I too have done similar modifications to this area, at one point I installed two 3 inch bolts through the open spaces to reduce play. I eventually replaced with polyurythane red bushing which I ordered through Jack Ashcroft's Saab Soundings- I used to have a subscription to his "cool" indy publication which would highlight such projects month-to-month as well as, basic maintenance procedures. I noticed more vibration through the steering wheel but increased shifting performance overall. It required carefully cutting out old bushing metal sleeve along with rubber. The new poly bushing was a simple two-halfs put back into dog bone with bolt hole through- a solid device unlike O.E.M. with the spaces between contact points. Good luck- use a jack under the engine to releave stress on dog bone to take it out- simple project.
