I imagine you're not far from me, then. I'm in Hemel. Cold weather seems to make quite a difference to turbo cars. In theory, all cars should benefit from colder intake air, since the air is denser and it should be possible to fit more mass into the cylinders at the same pressure.
With turbos, I'm not sure what makes the much bigger improvement, but I think it's a combination of things. The first is that the air is denser, as mentioned above. Also, the intercooler, being cooled with colder air, will be more effective. A cooler charge will be less prone to detonation, so the engine management system can maintain higher boost and more ingnition advance. Finally, since the engine produces more power, this spins up the turbo more quickly, reducing lag. Quicker spool-up and generally more power are what I've been experiencing since the cold spell started and I haven't modified anything recently.
The JT exhaust is made in Sweden and I bought it through Maptun. Two things made me choose it over Abbott (Jetex, the other contender, didn't call back to quote me a price until long after I'd given up on them and ordered the JT system). Firstly, I had been told that the Abbott system is noisy (the farts and pops on deceleration and raspy acceleration). I had the chance to hear a JT system and was impressed as it wasn't too loud. There is a bit of a growl on acceleration, some throatiness at idle and a little bit of rumble on deceleration through 3000-2000 RPM. Secondly, when I priced the Abbott solution including downpipe/cat, it came to about £1000! The JT system, with downpipe and cat, cost me less than £500 shipped. The cat accounted for almost £200 of that. On top of that, the Abbott system is, I believe, about 2.5" and the downpipe for the '96 is a standard downpipe with a high-flow cat core fitted.
The JT system is not stainless, but aluminised steel, except for the cat which is stainless. Even if I have to change a couple of parts on it during the time I have the car, it will still have been cheaper than the Abbott system. I believe the raspy, booming quality you talk about is characteristic of stainless steel sports exhausts.
