80/100W bulbs

Hello Distant Friends:
First, I could not keep my 92 9kT up and running well without the shared experience and knowledge from this BB. Thank you all.
Query: until I can locate (and afford) e-code replacement lights, can 80/100W headlight bulbs be installed in US-spec units without danger of melting sockets, housings, wires or wondering where the smoke from under the dash is originating from? From previous reading it seems best to use extant headlight wire harness to drive relays feeding direct-from-battery to headlights in order to cut voltage drop. If wiring is then uprated to handling the current, would I then just melt the front out of my plastic DOT headlights on high-beam? Thank you for your patience and a peaceful and prosperous New Year to all. km
