Some hiss Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I shoulda known that!, Quasi, Sat, 29 Dec 2001 17:40:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
At this point I'm just guessing, but I'm sure the one-way valve in the gas cap needs some pressure differential to open, so you'd have some residual low pressure in the tank, giving you a hiss.
Regularly opening the tank will work. The fuel system in my Sonett isn't vented - Saab used a poorly fitting gas cap to allow air into the system. It works well, except when I'm autocrossing, and gas comes out the filler and spills down the side of the car. So when I'm driving agressively, I put on a non-vented cap. I can run the car for about 20 minutes to a half-hour before I need to open the cap. That's a function of how much gas is in the car, and the strength of the fuel pumps (not very good in a two-stroke Sonett).
I have actually seen gas tanks collapse because the venting failed. Air pressure is an amazing thing if your fuel pump is strong enough. It's possible that your tank actually deformed some, and that either changed the tank level, or in some way interfered with the float mechanism of the fuel level sender.
