I did that project a couple of months ago. Not really that hard to replace, the only difficulty is in separating the ball joint from the control arm, for which you'll need a (tada!) ball joint separator. There are a couple of different kinds, a "pickle fork" and a screw & lever type which is more effective and easier to use. I used a pickle fork, mainly because AutoZone will loan them out for free and I didn't know anyone with the screw type. Be warned that once you start with a pickle fork you probably can't stop 'cause it will destroy the old joint. It probably took me an hour of pounding on the pickle fork to get the ball joint to finally pop free after I removed the pinch bolt (another adventure - I had to drive it out with a drift after I removed the nut) but a small sledge would probably accomplish the same thing in about 5 minutes. Overall time on the project was about 2.5 hours - again, it could go much smoother with a BFH (Big F'ing Hammer) to pound with. I'll be getting a BFH before I do the right side joint.
For the part, I got mine from Eeuroparts.com - good price and they include new bolts for the ball joint to attach to the control arm. Something on the order of $20 with shipping.
Good luck and happy new year,
Scott
