Whenever I sell a car, I'd much rather sell a car that looks great and has no engine, versus a car with a fresh race engine and a little body rust. Looks are great if you're going to display the car, but if you expect it to get you home on a rainy night, make sure the running gear is OK.

Cherry or no, '87 9000T go for about $2000 to $3000. But I would offer much less, and not to screw them out of anything-

How long has that car sat? If it's been unstarted for more than a year, was it put away properly, or just switched off one day? Unless a car is driven regularly, things dry out.

If the car has been sitting for a few years, the gas has turned to a thick sludge in the tank and fuel lines. I doubt they did an oil change before storing it, so the oil, with all those fine acids that form over time, along with any moisture, will have been attacking bearing surfaces. Pre 1988, there was a problem with a seal between the transmission oil cooler and the radiator - if the car is an automatic with an original radiator, there's a good chance that coolant and tranny fluid have mixed, which will destroy both the engine and transmission. Seals will have shrunk, and some coolant and engine oil mixed.

Water has been pulled into the brake fluid, and since the fluid never gets hot sitting in a garage, that water has been attacking brake parts. I'd expect the tires to be shot from ozone exposure, and the same for the CV joint boots.

If the car has been driven regularly, but very little, and serviced regularly, it would be a deal, but be prepared to deal with some stuff that's age related. If the car hasn't been driven regularly, and hasn't been serviced in the past, I don't know, 5 years or so, I would expect the car to be pretty scary. You might get it started OK, but after a week or so of driving find seals leaking and cylinders scored.

I suspect that if the car hasn't been driven for a while, and wasn't put away properly, it's no deal. Not unless you like to do a lot of work yourself, and you have a donor car for most of the drivetrain and running gear.
