A couple minor mysteries I'm trying to solve. My '93 CSE has about 120K on the motor and trans, 200K on the rest of the car. I bought it 2 months ago from the original owner who had all the service records from a very reputable dealer since day 1. Today I dropped it with a mechanic to have some minor issues resolved. Thought I'd post to see if anyone has advice before this guy calls me to tell me I need a second mortgage for some "major" repairs.
1. Small oil leak. It's been losing about a quart every three weeks and leave a small spot on the garage floor every night. The source seems to be in the right front area, near the oil filter. An oil & filter change didn't solve it, so I know it's not a bad filter gasket.
2. Wheel shimmy at about 60MPH. I'm running Gislaved snows on all four wheels. the tires are in their 2nd season, probably about 30K on them, but still very good tread and no signs of uneven wear. The car doesn't pull to either side. I've asked to have the tires balanced & rotated, hoping it's just something out of balance. Beyond this, what is the next logical thing to check?
3. An annoyance: The fog lights have not worked since I bought the car. Try as I might, I haven't figured out how to change these bulbs, so I finally just asked the mechanic to do it or find out why else they may not be working. the owner's manual gives no info on what bulbs to buy or how to replace them, so I'm guessing this is one of those things they encourage dealer attention for. Just this once, I'm going to pay to have this done, but I'm not comfortable paying someone to change a light bulb.
4. Cruise Control doesn't work. The "cruise" light in the dash comes on when you flip the switch, but it won't set or hold speed. I'm not paying to have this fixed, since generally I hate cruise control anyway. If anyone has some easy troubleshooting ideas for a self-fix, I might consider looking into it myself. I checked the fuses, they seem good, so what could be next?
Thanks for any feedback anyone might have.
