On some of your comments (timing chains, head gaskets, etc.) it is best to recommend doing searches on this site for some of the threads that have been created over the years. As far as your specific questions:

1) Temp gage should remain relatively stable once car has reached operating temp. Depending on how it is acting could be a loose wire, a stuck open thermostat. Kind of hard to tell by your description. Again, do a search and maybe something will more clearly indicate what going on.

2) Other than the Aero, all other 9K models specify the use of regular as a minimum. The way the engine management systems work, however, you will get better performance by using higher grades of fuel. ESpecially in certain weather conditions. By using premium you will have better knock resistence, thus the systems will not be turning back your timing or reducing boost.

3) SAABs don't have any more incidence of bad dash lights than any other make. They are just a bit harder to change and perhaps a bit more noticable when they go out. Use your lightswitch as you like. I have DRLs on my 9K and the dash lights are on all the time, at 165K kms they all work and have never been replaced (more than I can say for my LR Discovery)

4) CD player (if its OEM) can be fixed thru a SAAB program for fairly reasonable money. Might want to check that out if you wish to keep the car original. Some of the other listers might help me out here, but I think all the 9Ks since and including '93 are pre-wired for the trunk mounted player. Another option as it is fairly easy to set-up.

5) SAAB did gave an option that was a piece that sat in the console and had two cup holders, coin holders, and a cassette holder. I posted earlier in the week with the part number. Personally, I'm thinking of ditching the SAAB piece and going the Taurus route.

6) Sane? Well it depends. SAABs are not Toyotas (actually that is a good thing) and they may be preceived as not having the reliability of the Japanese makes. Probably all true; but like most European makes, SAABs have personality and at the end of the day despite the troubles you may have, you still think they work pretty damn well. The day you think that any Japanese car is fundamentally (and that takes in every aspect of ownership) better, drop the SAAB and go back to them. Me, I've had 40 cars of various makes and I've had trouble with all of them, but I like the Euro makes better for fairly unexplainable reasons.

Hope this all helps and welcome. Have fun with your 9K.
