I live in Buffalo and drive a 180k mile 1994 9000 CSE that's been fed nothing but plain old fossil oil for its life. True that many of the miles are highway but there's no problem with the engine. Block heaters aren't really necesary in our climate. A good synthetic oil will make a world of difference in cold start ability and wear, though. I used to run Mobil 1 in my Miata and what a difference in starting it made!
