I hate those rubber couplers... All in the name of reducing NVH... (Noise, Vibration & Harshness)
earlier 99s had a all-metal coupler. Very much like a universal joint from a socket set. Broke the rubber coupler on my 1980 99 shortly after I got it, but I had a spare of the solid metal coupler, which went in.
I don't know if you can use the much later 900 couplers on a 99. They have the taper pin on one side, and a clamp arrangement on the other. That might be better than trying another of the rubber ones.
I never thought to see if the all-metal coupler on the earlier (up to 76 or 77) 99s was the same one as the 95/96/97... It might be...
