oil drain plug stripped ARRRRGGGG!

Decided to change the oil for the first time in my 78 99. Service history notes that a garage had installed a 14 mm drain plug two years ago when the threads pulled the first time. The threads were shot when I tried to tighten the plug this time. By the looks of all the oil on the bottom of the engine, I suspect the last one to change the oil pulled the threads out and left it as is.
How to fix? The local NAPA sells replacement oversize drainplugs, which they say you just screw in. I assume they cut their own threads as you tighten. Should I take it to a good garage to get it fixed more professionally or go the Napa route? Or is there another way to repair?
So I have a 14 mm bolt in there now. NAPA sells imperial, do I go 9/16 or 5/8. Or do I just find a nice big cliff with roadside access...
