LJB, you can use the lock strip for screen windows if you'd like. Saab had a thing they put out for '78s that talked about using 8 or 10 gauge wire but I find that using that stuff, the possibility of gouging the wire and exposing it (visible for all once that happens) is really high. I've used the screen window stuff with a whole lotta success...with the windshields in the cars. WIth them out, it's easier, of course, but taking out a windshield and putting one in isn't a cake walk either. Just take you're time.
Brently, if you used contact cement, you may be able to heat everything back up and get it to move a bit...smoothing it out. Or you could simply redo it. If you have new material, heat it up and pull on the dash side. See if you can get it to move at all. Couldn't hurt.
Oh, about the lockstrip, there are different sizes of the stuff and a few colors. I'd choose depending on the thickness of the vinyl. I use fairly fine stuff when locking down original vinyl.
