Is shifting difficult all of a sudden? It would take alot of movement of the engine to bend that rod, since the rubber coupler is going to give some before the metal rod would bend. If you have to replace it, the shifter housing has to be separated from the shaft, the front carpet needs to be removed(and anything else under the carpet that may be in the way at the hump), you also get to have fun removing the taper pin, where the shaft connects to the tranny. I have info on-line to show how to remove the gear shift housing, but that's all I have. The manual doesn't go into detail on how to remove the shifter shaft.
Drive the car on the highway, if you hear a rumbling coming from the front, I still say it's the wheel bearing. I drove my '75 home 50 miles and it rumbled the whole way home. The bad bearing didn't appear any hotter than the good bearing. Since I couldn't tell which one was bad, I replaced them both.
