in gear. Then inspect everything while it is moving. Take the front tires off also. If you had a stethescope, you could probably listen to both bearings too.
If your axle popped out of the drive, the car wouldn't move without making a horrible banging noise, or it might not move at all. My 77 used to pop axles(passenger side), destroying the tripod bearing, until I replaced a badly worn side motor mount. It's also doubtful you bent a driveshaft, as they are pretty beefy, but I guess anything is possible.
I'll look for CV and driveshaft pics or pages from the manual.
