I would suggest to start the engine while the carpet is out and look for fuel leakage from the metal lines. Working pressure in the system is around 35psi, so if you have a hole in the line it will come out. Part of the system is fuel hose anyway, so replacing some of the metal line with a high pressure hose and clamping it should work fine. If you choose not to use hose, buy some metal brake line of the same size and use compression fittings to join the pieces.
I think I recall buying high pressure hose from Advance Auto Parts, but they only sold it in packages in 18" lengths.
