Ed, I've done quite a few tanks. The best product I've used is the POR15 tank products. More often than not, you don't even need to use the final tank liner product. I only buy that if neccessary. Get yourself a box of BB's and rig up a rope from a tree limb to use as a "swing". Believe me...doing this takes all the hard work out of restoring a tank. The BB's will assist in getting all the scailing and loose rust out. Just make sure all BB's are removed when done! Pool plugs work great to plug up the tank. POR 15's metal prep converts rust. Your tank will be like new. If you soak your sending unit overnight it will also be like new. The most imprtant step is the cleaning/scale removal with the BB's. The cleaner should be used with hot (I use boiling) water. Keep repeating the process until it comes out clean. If or when you run out of the tank cleaner solution use Simple Green at that point. Best of luck.
