I have an opinion.
If it was me, and I was looking for a car like you mention, I would buy the blue 72 listed in the classifieds here. He mentions a bare metal strip and re-paint ten years ago, and to me that means they removed the sub-standard OEM paint and replaced it with something more durable. Anyone who would go to the trouble to strip a car to bare metal is anal about making it right. The metal used on the earlier ones was alot thicker, and the corrosion protection Saab used back then seemed top-notch, so body-wise, it would outlast the 78 on ebay. Another plus is it has a 4spd trans, which were alot more durable than the automatics. I've owned at least twenty 99's in my time, and I never owned one with an automatic. Saabs were meant to be shifted!
The red 78 was also repainted, but with rust popping thru already, I'd avoid it if you don't want to have to deal with rust holes in a few more years. The bidding is already at $550 with 6 days left.
The 78 may be newer and have less miles, but it is definitely not the better buy.
