The fuel pump pick-up comprises of a rubber hose connected to the bottom of the pump, which connects to a plastic strainer. It's not uncommon for the rubber hose to deteriorate over time, letting the strainer drop to the bottom of the tank.
I used forced hot air to dry the tank out. If you stuff a hairdrier in the inlet port, and block off the other holes with rags, the tank can be dried in less than an hour.
If you have a different type of pick-up, I sure would like to see a picture of it.
The only things that would still be in the tank are metal baffles, and a pipe which connects two of the "sections" together. They cannot be removed.
