Personally, I dislike A/C in a 99. I tried and tried to make the original dealer system work in my first 99 (1976 99 GL), but eventually, it became more of a liability than a help.
I found that the 99 had great airflow through the cabin, and that I'd be cool enough on all but the hottest days, especially while driving with the rear wing windows open.
A/C is a big drag on these motors, and increasing the heat rejection requirement from the small engine bay will make the car more prone to overheat. Maybe a compressor other than the old York will be better, I could not tell you.
Good luck to you if you pursue it. You're more adventurous than I !
