So - my wiring diagrams only seem to cover through '78, but I think the key difference is whether it's running K-jet with an O2 sensor or not - if you have an O2 sensor, then there's a wire from the ECU to the fuel pump relay socket that isn't there on cars that don't have the O2 sensor.
Either way, you should check to make sure that both of the ground pins on the relay are actually grounding properly. Sounds like you already checked for 12V at the other two.
Also, if your car does not have an O2 sensor, and the car you pulled your test relay from does, that relay would be expecting both the input 12V and the tach signal, so it likely wouldn't close without that additional signal.
I dunno if I'm helping or just muddying the water here - but I would second Doug's opinion that you will want a manual - without the diagram in hand it is much more difficult to see the relationships between the different electrical components - and having the color key for the wires is pretty handy to...
