I can't remember if your car had sat a long time since the last time it was run. Old gas will smoke something terrible. Strokers that sit around idling while fiddling with the engine build up lots of oil in the engine and smoke like crazy too. Is it possible the car just needs to be taken out on the road and driven for awhile? Does it run well enough to do that? The smoke might clear up after driving a few miles. I remember taking out my 1963 95 after sitting a few months and it smoked like crazy for the first couple of miles. Synthetic oil smokes less than non-synthetic so you might want to try some on your next fill up. 600ml (approximately 2/3 quart) of Golden Spectro Synthetic two stroke oil is the correct amount to use with 8 gallons of gas. I use it and I only have smoke on start up.
Head cleaning: I usually smear paint remover on the underside of the head to loosen the carbon. Then I rinse it off and use my bench grinder with a fine toothed wire wheel to clean it off. A fine wire wheel will not damage the gasket surface. (You can use the same method on the pistons.) I use a dremmel tool with a small wire wheel to clean around the spark plug holes. You can clean the top of the head with the bench grinder wire wheel too. It will clean up like new.
Carb: Just remove the top and clean out the float bowl. The float is held in by one screw. If the bowl is filled with crap, you should take the carb off the engine give it a thorough cleaning. The Solex carb is a very reliable unit, you probably won't find anything wrong with it.
What to look for in engine: Spin the crank bearings with your finger, when oiled they should spin smooth as silk. If they don't their not perfect and might not last very long. But who knows? They might go another 20,000 miles and for most stroker owners that translates to ten or more years! If the pistons are melted anywhere- that's not good. Remove the rings and scrape out the ring grooves. If the block has deep scratches- that's not good either. It's really simple in there, if it looks like shit, it is.
