The V4s are newer, so it's a bit easier to find a good example, and they're easier to drive around town because they have more torque. The two-strokes require a higher commitment level when it comes to maintenance, and need to be driven more sensitively, but if you want the real essence of vintage SAAB they are the way to go!
The Montecarlo 850 and its immediate predecessor the Granturismo 850 were the performance/luxury versions of the 2-stroke 96, and by far the most desirable in terms of performance, panache, and heritage (Eric C. was driving a Granturismo 850 for both his Monte Carlo Rally wins.) They have oil injection (no mixing with gas), more horsepower than the standard stroker, fully instrumented dashboards, and nicer interior fittings including reclining seats and pockets for wine bottles hidden under the rear armrests!
