Hi. I just purchased a new Clutch Disc, Pressure Plate and Release bearing from Andrews of Princeton. I have never rebuilt a clutch before but I think I can do it. Is there anything I should know before I start this?
The Haynes manual is pretty good, don't start without it or some equivalent step-by-step information source. Don't forget a new pilot bushing. Remove the flywheel and have it surfaced at a machine shop. The step height on the flywheel is 0.656" +/- .005" I think, courtesy of Jack Lawrence, and not an easy number to come by.
Here are a few questions...
Do I jack the car up before or after I remove the motor?
I think that unless you intend to remove the transmission with the engine, which is possible but not the usual thing if you are only doing the clutch, there is no need to jack up the car at all as for engine removal you get at everything from above. (Engine + trans is different because you have to remove drive axles.) However you will be bending over a darn sight less and your back will be happier if you put the car at a convenient working height before starting.
What is the best way to remove the motor in a garage without a hoist?
Rent a cherry-picker. Next best maybe a chain or cable hoist of adequate capacity tied off to a reliable roof beam if you have one.
Should I put the car up on 4 jack stands? Or just 2 in the front?
I would do 4. Large blocks of wood are great too. Cinder blocks are a no-no.
Is there a way to test the clutch once I replace everything but before I put the ingine back in?
Nope, but if you do everything right, and your hydraulic system is OK, and there are no failed parts like the clutch fork, it will work.
Any tips to make this smooth would be great.
Hope this helps, feel free to post any further questions.
