rusty jack supports

you know those bent metal receptacles that the jack fits into?
mine are quite rusty. i can't tell how bad it is around the jack points, this summer i plan to go under there and clean it all out. i can already tell those jack supports will have to go, and i'm pretty sure mine is not the first car this has happened to. if i take them off, can i still put a jack there? has anyone else had this problem?
