I have a '69 V4-96 76,000m and still on the original starter motor.

Many starter motors will last longer, but your mileage is maybe about the beginning of the failure curve on a mileage basis.

I've been having some problems starting, and I don't know whether it's the starter motor, the battery, or both.

Could be both, and add in charging system and wiring, now you have four parameters. Could be any one or two or three or all four.

Occasionally I have trouble starting up - turning it over just results in clicking coming from the starter motor. Just the other day though I used a fully charged battery out of my 900 turbo, and it started fine.

Then probably you do not have a starter motor problem, but a problem of not enough power to the starter. I did say PROBABLY.

The battery I have in there is a Mercedes 12v 62Ah 280Adin 480Aen (not a sealed type).

This was put in by the guy who restored it, and is a $200 battery, so I'm reluctant to trash it if it's ok.

How old is the battery? Batteries begin to fail at 3-4 years, at 5-6-7 years if there is a suspect battery problem, sometimes it is sensible to just replace it. Or have it tested.

Anyone help? Is the battery the wrong type?

Should be fine if it is about the same physical dimensions as the original.

How do I know for sure that the starter motor is up for replacement?

If the wiring is good (we have not gone into that), and the charging system is operating correctly (ditto), and the starter is getting a good signal from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid (ditto), and the battery is not failing (we have covered that a little bit), then the starter motor has a problem. There are specific tests
to nail your situation but it helps to have the equipment to perform them.

As you may see, the situation is complex overall and there are many ways to get fooled. HOWEVER, don't abandon hope. Chances are you have a charging system problem or a battery problem. Look in those directions first.
