Not to second guess spiv, (whose expertise i respect), but here is what i
think is the simplist way: 1)Pull the plugs. 2)pull the valve cover off the drivers side. 3)With a ratchet and socket on the bolt in the center of
the timing pulley, turn the engine by hand until the rockers on #4 cyl are
rocking. You can check this by turning the engine back and forth a few degrees in each direction to make sure BOTH the intake and exhaust valves
are rocking. Look at the timing mark on the pulley you are turning; it should be near the TDC mark. Now back it up 6 degrees until the 6BTDC mark
on the pulley and the front cover line up. Stop! Now follow spiv's directions for putting in the distributor. When it is bolted in the line
in the center of the rotor lobe should be exactly opposite the line on the
edge of the distributor. Put the cap back on. Put the plugs bak in. If there is gas in the carb., it should fire right up, MINE did! If you want
to kill two birds with one stone you can check the valve adjustment on all\
the valves on the driver side while the engine is running if you can stand
the oil spray. I think the adjustement is more accurate this way. Luck!
