I'd recommend you put some alligator clips on a digital voltmeter and hook it up to the dash fuesbox somewhere, put the DVM on the passenger seat and glance over at the readout now and then. Note the voltages with the car in the morning, during startup, and as you go around town. Turn the lights on and off, etc. You might notice the voltage stepping up and down--that's the regulator working. Do the direction indicator lights work poorly? Do the headlights look dim at night? After all that you'll have a much better sense of whether the alternator is producing enough, or if the regulator is not stepping up enough to trickle charge the battery. In my case, I noticed that with the headlights and fan on, my average voltage was falling as a drove around, so I upgraded the alternator. In your case, one or the other might be temperature sensitive, or you use the fan or some other load more in the summer than in the winter.
