I had a similar problem on my 71 Sonett. What I found was that there is a wire on the fuse panel that powers the circuit that "excites" the altenator. As the alternator is being excited, when you start the engine, the charge light is powered and then it goes out after a few seconds. If the connection goes bad (mine broke off at the fuse panel's rivet), the altenator light stays on after the engine is started.
