Filler shrinkage could happen over time I suppose. There were a few areas on the 75 where the major body work was done that looked like they could have been blocked again, and possibly resprayed, depending on how much paint was removed when blocking. I finally had enough of the car and sold it to a guy out west. It's his to worry about now:). Poor blocking/feathering of the fillers could also cause a rippled look...and some paint colors are more forgiving of poor bodywork. Black is certainly not the color of choice for your first auto body experience. ALOT of patience is a good attribute to have through-out the whole process.
One possible way to avoid the problem could be to let the fillers and primers cure over a period of time, then block them again before painting. I didn't have that luxury before Hershey since the car wasn't painted until a month before the show, then still had to be re-assembled. Most cars you see at major shows were restored over a period of years, not months like mine were.
My viggen blue '73 was done the same way(in a few months), but if I were to paint it again, it would just need some minor blocking to make it straighter. Since the paint and clear cost in the $500 range, it won't be re-sprayed any time soon.
There's also a method used by alot of professionals where they mist a guide coat(some contrasting color) over the primer coat, then block till the guide coat disappears. Wherever the guide coat remains after blocking will show you where the low spots are.
I might get better at it, since as of a few weeks ago I'm working full time in a body shop.
