Doug's right, the DCC and DP are great for the amateur painter. Ask the guys at the paint store for the DuPont data sheets on them; they'll include exact instructions on how to mix and apply it.
I had the grainy-primer problem on my first painting job, and found it can be caused by either (or both) of two things:
(thing 1) Mixing too much hardener with the paint -- this causes it to harden too soon. When mixed properly, the paint "flows out" as it dries, giving a smooth surface. If it dries too fast, this flow-out doesn't have time to happen. You've GOT to measure the hardener accurately!
(thing 2) Spray technique -- my first impulse was to hold the gun fairly far away and not put down too much paint, hoping to avoid runs. Bad idea; the paint collected into little globs while flying through the air and never had a chance to make a uniform film. I learned you need to work fairly close and spray enough to get the surface wet, stopping just short of causing runs. Takes practice! (Smooth "railroad board" from an art supply store is a pretty good thing to practice on if you don't have a lot of junk car sheet metal handy.)
PS -- My car still looks like heck, but that's because I haven't had time to color-sand and buff it yet. Anybody got any good tips on buffing?
