It sure sounds like a timing problem. Otherwise, with all new stuff in there it can sometimes take a few hours of running to get all the friction
in the engine worn down. Lets assume the two dots on the crankshaft gear were aligned with their respective dots on the camshaft and balance shaft gears, and check the distributor timing. If you can get the engine to run
anywhere under 5K RPM's, loosen the lockbolt on the distributor enough to move the distributor bak and forth a few degrees in either direnction. Does the engine smooth out in any direction? If so leave it where it runs best and give it 3 or 4 hours of running. I took my 1.7L engine apart, and since all the parts seemed fairly new, I just put it bak together with nothing but new gaskets, and it still took about 2 or 3 hundred miles before it would run in the normal temperature range. It would warm up to where the temp guage showed just next to the RED zone, then it seemed like
the thermostat would open (or something), and the temp would drop bak a little but still not in the middle, (about 3/4 th's), then after a week of
daily runs, it would stop and stay in the middle. If you still can't get it to run right. recheck the timing gears. Are you SURE you set them correctly?
