I've attached more photos of the process. I decided to make a vintage look race car, something a little bit different with the aim of doing some occasional solo events (I also have a Viggen (daily drive) and a Quattro S2 with a 20 valve turbo motor swap from a 200 TQ for more spirited driving in solo and rally) but mostly just for a fun fast head turning ride. I had an idea of what I think the Saab should have looked like at Le Mans.
I degreased the engine bay and chemically stripped all the paint before it was etched and primed with a bare metal high heat primer. Than 3 coats of "machine gray" color paint and 1 coat of clear. The paint has prooven to be pretty durable even after the engine install and oil leaks here and there. I plan to paint the car in same color with 2 coats of clear, no bumpers, wide steel dark gray stock rims and large round white competition number circles.
Engine mods were pretty mild with an F4 isky cam, all new bearings, pistons (0.31 over), everything was machined, balanced and replaced. The head was opened up with bigger valves and ported (inlet and exhaust) and flowed. I opted for the smaller ICH Weber due to relativley small fuel demand that an engine of this size needs and I don't recomend going any bigger with a single barrel manifold. Pointless ingnition, hi volt coil, rebuilt starter and distributor. The exhaust is a 2" without collector and one resonator at back. It's good fun to drive and you can still leave skidmarks from a stop sign :)to everyones surprize.
The rest of the car was gone through and I replaced and restored all the wheelwells, dropped the car about 1.5", gas kyb's, all new brakes, rebuilt calipers, stainless lines, e brake cables. I painted all the suspension components (A-arms, axles, rear axle) with durable POR black chassis paint.
The car also has a Tach, water temp (x2), oil pressure, voltmeter and an old Brantz rally trip computer for TSD rallies.
I've added more photos if anyone is still interested. Sorry for the length...but there is a lot of stuff I did. All work was done by me in my puny garage along with a bonneville flats BMW bike project, 3 mountain bikes, 5 surfboards and a tiny radio...ha ha. I can honestly say I don't have to turn on the light in the garage to grab something it's so small and I know where everything is.
enjoy! let me know how it goes with any other projects that people are doing, it's always fun to see.
