What probably happened was that the lower bearing on the connecting rod failed. There is very little clearance between the connecting rod and the engine block, so the loose connecting rod hammered the engine to death. It is not rcommended to use a different engine half, however talking to various dealers who were around in the 60s, they quite often interchanged. These blocks were cast in the same molds, machined by the same machines, ergo they should be the same or awfully close. and yes, I have used different halves, without too much ill effect. My advice would be to test fit using the crankshaft and see how tight or loose it is, If it looks good..... At least this way you are only out time, which I am sure you have discovered these little critters thrive on.
