Does a four stroke V4 fire every plug every revolution of the crankshaft, or every other? i.e. Is the #1 plug supposed to fire every 6 degress btdc as indicated by the timing mark, or every other?
History:
Bought a ’67 96 last fall which seller claimed was not running and hadn’t run in years. I emptied the fuel system from the fuel pump to the carb of old gas, and connected the fuel pump to draw from a portable gas can with fresh gas. I recharged the battery and tried to start it. Surprisingly, it started. It idled for a long time (20 or more minutes). I started it and ran it like this several times. After a few times, it started to stall out. It got harder and harder to start. Eventually got to a point where the engine was very hard to start, even after putting drops of gas directly in the carb, and if it started, it would die in a few seconds.
What I have done so far:
Fuel wise, I have an essentially new system from tank to manifold. The fuel tank was cleaned with the renu process, the hard fuel lines have been flushed and are clear, soft fuel lines have been replaced with new, the fuel filter has been replaced with new, and the old FoMoCo carb replaced with a correctly jetted, never previously installed Weber 34ICH. The gas in the tank is fresh from a local pump where I get most of my fuel.
I am getting fuel from the tank to the carb.
Electrically,
The alternator was rebuilt at a local shop which found two bad diodes. I have installed new plugs, wires, coil, and a Pertronix electronic ignition. With a timing light I see that the plug wire is carrying a charge at an even interval when cranking the engine.
Where I am stuck:
The timing light didn’t match the #1 plug to the timing mark at 6 degrees. I removed and reinstalled the distributor iaw the shop manual, setting the timing mark on the crank to the 6 degree setting, and installing the distributor matching the rotor to the setting on the distributor housing.
I tried to start the car and it started, running for a few minutes before stalling. I tried to start it again, and it wouldn’t. I turned the engine over to the 6 degree crank setting and checked the distributor rotor, and it seems to be 180 degrees out of firing position.
This is where I am stuck, wondering if whatever drives the distributor is broken in the engine.
Any advice?
