I don't think an engine will run with the igintion 180 off. I made that mistake a while back; all that happened were unhealthy noises during cranking and air/petrol mixture coming out of the K&N filter. Besides it would not explain why the engine dies out after a while.
Some question come into mind: did the engine not suffer from vapour lock? Idling can heat things up pretty badly under the bonnet. Is the carb float set correctly (don't know if that would change during heating up but better check)? Is the idle mixture not set too rich? Engine would start but chokes itself after a while, like starting a cold engine with choke that works too well; the engine stalls after a while. Did the Pertronix come with a new coil? Sometimes old coils stop working properly when they heat up. When you installed the Pertronix did you place the ring with the magnets over the cam lobes properly (I didn't the first time; ended up with a wobly distributer cap)?
That's all I can think of for now.
