Freewheel - to use or not to use?

Sorry to fill up your forum page but I am anxious to learn about my new car. I have searching the forum and reading up on freewheel for a couple hours now but still have some questions.
I have basicly now been scared by all the horror stories of using it. I don't want to shatter it and be left stranded somewhere.
Regarding the freewheel, how do I engage or disengage it? From my reading it seems you may be able to avoid all of these problems by avoided simply locking it out and not using the freewheel function, is this correct or are they still weak?
Thanks for all the info
I would like to use the feature and if I did, how do I avoid breaking it?
My car is a 1971 v4 96, would this classify as a car that used the "older 6-roller hub" which I understand is supposed to be much stronger?
What exactly is the weak part of the transmissions as a whole that cause them to break, what kinds of things to I need to make sure I don't do to avoid breaking it?
