I go along with the other people who say that even the 10-roller freewheel is fine as long as you use some sensitivity with it -- change the transaxle lube frequently (I may be a bit wacko about this, but I change mine every time I change the oil) and when you're driving, don't bring up the revs abruptly and bang it into engagement. Bring them up smoothly and engage it gently, and you'll be fine.
I did break mine, but I did it at an open-track day when some moron passed me going into a corner (which was supposed to be a no-passing area) while I was in the middle of a downshift. I wound up banging the freewheel pretty hard, heard a "ping," and next thing I knew I had no drive. It turned out that the freewheel hub (10-roller) had shattered under the extra strain, allowing the rollers to pop out. I was really lucky that none of them went through the gear teeth, so I was able to save the transaxle.
But as I said, that was on a track; for street use, there's no reason NOT to use the freewheel as long as you know how to use it. I really liked having it on the street, and it made around-town driving a lot more relaxed as you could exit from corners without having to bother with using the clutch. Next time I have to have the transaxle out, I'm going to try to find a 6-roller hub and re-enable the freewheel.
