I believe that the EP part of a gear oil is another additive (like the GL5 package) that works to maintain a lubricating film in spite of the temperatures caused by the Extreme Pressure the oil is being subjected to. I don't think it is the pressure that is the concern, just the temperatures caused by the pressure of two sliding metal surfaces squeezing the oil in between them. Also, were there not EP gear oils long before the GL5 packages such as GL3 and GL4 EP oils?
