...is not the same as using a straight 90-weight oil. It is nearly impossible to find the correct oil as written in the 30-40 year old manuals, because oils have changed. The multigrade synthetic works well in these transmissions and the synthetic will quiet a lot of noises. I nursed a '75 99 with a trashed third gear synchro for three years with frequent oil changes using synthetics.
The problem with thicker oil is that it doesn't get into the needle bearings as well when cold, causing premature failure of them. When I had access to several different gear oils at the shop in New Hapshire in '73-4, we used GL-5 Castrol Hypoy in the SAAB 96s, where the factory manual says you can use either GL-4 or GL-5.
