E10 means 10% ethanol added to gasoline. M85 means 85% methanol added to gasoline. Ethanol (E) and Methanol (M) are both alcohols, specifically Ethanol and Methanol. Both can be used as fuels alone or in various blends.
Ethanol in low concentrations like E10 is pretty benign to fuel system components. Methanol in any concentration tends to be troublesome so that special components, rubber compounds and such, are required in engines running methanol.
If you experience problems with E blends up to 10%, the problems were probably going to happen anyway, the ethanol did not cause them.
Jillions of cars have run jillions of miles on E10 and failure rates are low.
Vintage Saabs have vintage hoses which will fail with age use and heat regardless of fuel.
E fuels might accelerate failure of an already failing hose, gasket, diaphragm, etc, but I don't think E fuels like E10 are a primary cause of failure.
M fuels have corrosive characteristics that I am not qualified to detail, but generally M is corrosive and causes problems in vehicles lacking the specific modifications to counter the problems.
M fuels are not generally available to the public AFAIK.
When fuel system components on your vintage Saab fail it is probably not because you are running E fuels but because they are old and were about to fail anyway.
If you are running M fuels that is a different matter.
