"Just a question...What does the future of vintage Saab support?"
Well I don't think this question has any exact answer. But as a generality the case is similar to any other vintage vehicle. Some relevant factors are age, numbers built, durability, individuality, fashionability, driveability, practicality, rarity, cost to maintain...............
Pluses and minuses abound and depend greatly on your perspective. Do you want a unique show vehicle or a daily driver? There is probably only one 1919 Deusenberg Pegasus left in the universe, so it is a museum piece. There are thousands of SAABs that are daily drivers. Bottom line, what will the market support?
New ring and pinion sets for V4 transmissions do not exist as far as I know. However I am confident that several exist in the world. If I wanted one I could pursue the trail.
Somebody made the original ring and pinion. Specifications were drawn. They may still exist. Given an engineering drawing for the ring and pinion set, or a sample to work from, I think I could cause production of a set for about US$50,000. Two sets, $30,000 each. 10,000 sets (more than the number of SAABs remaining in the universe), a mere 400.00 per set.
"I know the resources for parts and service are there, but from what I can see, getting up there in years. Does anyone know what happens to the vintage Saabs in 10-15 years?"
Nope.
If SAABs had been sold in Cuba you would see them everywhere. If you want to keep yours for 10-15 years, keep it in good condition and gather in critical spares.
"Are there younger resources and mechanics being trained in the V4/tranny/parts/etc., so that help will be there in the future? Just wondering...."
Nope.
However, plenty of people exist who can repair/restore/replace a vintage transmission of any marque even if they have not seen the identical article before. General principles rule.
