Parkhurst,
I also think that low oil pressure caused by worn bearings would come on gradually.
Though you don’t have many miles on the oil and filter, I think you need to eliminate that as a cause even if it is not the problem.
Many oil filters have check valves in them, so maybe it is possible that they could cause a problem, or the filter media may have collapsed. I think the oil should bypass it if this happens, but I’m not sure.
For something that could cause a rapid drop in oil pressure, the oil pressure relief valve comes to mind. It could be stuck or have a broken spring. Unfortunately, though I’m not sure, I think it isn’t accessible from the outside of the engine.
Anyway, here is the low oil pressure list from the trouble shooting guide in the Intereurope workshop manual for the Saab V4:
e) Faulty oil pressure gauge, switch or wiring
f) Relief valve defective
g) Oil pick-up pipe strainer blocked
h) Oil filter over-flow valve defective
i) Worn oil pump
j) Damaged or worn main and/or big-end bearings
k) Incorrect grade of engine oil
l) Oil level low
n) Oil leak of the pressurized side of the lubrication system
I didn’t leave “m” out. It is not for that symptom.
