It's not as easy as you might think. Vintage Saab disk brakes were never set up for emergency brake cables, for example. And you do need emergency bgakes! Also, since most of the braking burden is handled by the front brakes, I would guess that the difference in braking distance between properly adjusted combination disk/drum setups and a disk/disk setup for these cars is not very big. I did see once that someone had replaced all four brakes with an entirely new high-performance setup, which did make a difference.
