I'm in full agreement- I always pull them as a unit. Then separate them on the floor. I find this works much better when you reassemble the trans to the motor- a breeze on the floor and no stress on the drive shaft vs trying to do it in the car. Others may disagree, but that's my 2 cents.
And also agree with Brian about undoing the bottom bolt on the ball joint. You can then pull the drive shaft right out and block it out of the way. In fact, I do both sides and have a little fixture I made up for my floor jack to jack the front of the car. Jack the car, remove wheels, undo bottom ball joint bolts, pull driveshafts out of the way and block them, lift motor, slide car back using floor jack.
One other area that COULD be a pain- rear trans "nipple" stuck in rear motor mount. Pull, twist, swear, pull some more. It will come. Some advocate backing out the rear motor mount bolt and giving it a good smack with a hammer. Be very careful with this approach- the nipple is aluminum and you can bugger up the threads. How do you think I know that??
