I'm pretty sure you're on to at least one of my problems!
From my limited understanding of transmissions - the layshaft should NOT be spinning when the clutch is disengaged.
However, here's what happens:
* If I jack up the left front tire, (so the wheel is off the ground), then start the car and put the shifter into neutral - wheel doesn't spin.
* Now I depress the clutch, wait 20 seconds, then try to shift into reverse -- (I think reverse has no synchro) -- I get bad grinding of the shifter fork.
My 'work around' for years has been to shift into first (keeping clutch depressed), then let off the clutch slowly until the tranny is engaged - but since the brake is on etc, engine slows & gears slow to a stop, then REALLY quickly shift into reverse. It then shifts into reverse without grinding.
The problem to me seems to be that the layshaft's gears are spinning while I'm parked in nuetral, with clutch in.
* With the car still jacked up on left front, car idleing - I can shift into first gear - leaving the clutch depressed and the left front tire (the one in the air) will start spinning up.
This has always made me think that the *clutch* isn't disengaging properly - so I've fiddled with every shim/adjuster nut combination possible.
I can adjust the clutch quite a bit - to the point where depressing the pedal forces the fork into the pressure plate.
I did the engine rebuild myself (several years ago) and did replace the pilot bushing (maybe it's not in quite right?) I also think I bought a pretty cheap clutch kit (maybe it wasn't quite correct for this tranny, or out of tolerances?)
So, is my problem here just the clutch? I definitely have a freewheel 'nuetering'/'lockout' issue as well - but I'd like to address the clutch problem first - assuming I do have one...
