Sounds to me like either the clutch or the pilot bearing is dragging, so the input shaft never stops spinning.
You might be able to tell which by the noise it's making. A bad pilot bearing will often make a rumbling or scraping noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, the transmission is in gear, and the car is stationary. Shifting into neutral will usually stop the noise by allowing the input shaft to spin.
I had one seize on a VW Bus once. That was fun.
