When it won't go into reverse, or you have trouble getting reverse, it is often due to worn/broken parts inside the shift column. One problem I've encountered is that the stamped sheetmetal housing splits where the lever pivots. Inside that housing, the pivot is a nylon ball, and I've seen that ball split. The inner end of the lever has a nylon sleeve which slides into the hole at the end of the vertical shaft, and I've also encountered that sleeve missing. All of these things can contribute to slop in the mechanism that prevents moving the vertical rod far enough to engage the reverse fork. I haven't really encountered substantial wear in the universal joints under the hood, but I suppose it is possible.
Adjusting the steering column might help for a while, but if any of those parts are worn/broken/missing, it will get worse.
Don't attempt to disassemble the lever housing, unless you have a repair manual to reference for reassembly. I do this so rarely, that I still use the picture in the manual, even though I've been working on these cars for almost 40 years.
