Re: Bearings or Oil Pump Posted by eric in vermont [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Bearings or Oil Pump, BAAB ![]() ![]() |
I remember you wrote about this a while back. Refresh my memory- what is your oil pressure?
As for the BS bearings- grab the lower pulley and yank back and forth on it. If you feel a little play, then the BS front bearing is starting to wear. If it feels like alot of play, then it's time to replace the bearings. I'm sorry I can't give you a dimension- it's a "feel" kind of thing.
Have you done a compression check just to see what shape your rings are in? Often, the two go hand in hand- worn bearings and worn rings mean a worn engine.
What does your used oil look like? Run some through a filter and see what you find. When bearings wear, the wear gets worse and worse over time. Meaning that the slop and play causes exponential wear. If you have low pressure due to worn bearings, you should see it in your oil. You can even send a sample out to have it analyzed. If you oil has no bearing fragments in it, I suppose it could be a clogged oil pump screen or a worn oil pump or a weak spring in the pump. As you know, checking the pump is easy- once you have the engine out!
I just put a three-pack of VDO gauges in my 96 over the weekend. Oil pressure, voltmeter, and vacuum gauge. Well, two out of three- the vacuum gauge was back-ordered. All from Summit Racing. The engine is a 1500 which came with the car and supposedly was rebuilt at some point in it's life. The speedo was replaced so I have no idea how many miles are on it. I did an oil change at the same time. Oil pressure is 50 psi at cold start, dropping down towards 40 psi at warm idle. 45 to 50 on acceleration. My Sonett had a rebuilt Jack Lawrence motor with a higher pressure oil pump spring. I don't recall exactly, but I think it runs up in the 60 to 70 psi range.
