Hi Tom,
So the situation was this- you were driving along in conventional, non-freewheel mode, and as you applied max torque (ie, stepping on it going up a hill), the car jolted and you found yourself in freewheel.
So the question is, what happened? My guess is that your freewheel mechanism may have been on the edge of engaging the freewheel and when torque was applied, it was enough to jump the gearbox into freewheel. Are you sure of the freewheel lever position? IE, could this have happened? Could you have bumped the level with your foot recently?
Usually, the symptom is a sticky freewheel. IE, you are in freewheel mode and the take up is jerky as you applied the gas, or it acts like you're in neutral. This is usually due to crud in the freewheel mechanism. This doesn't appear to be your problem.
However, the freewheel contains a device known as the "freewheel dog". It is a sleeve that moves back and forth with the movement of the level. It has a series of teeth on it two opposite places. When in normal mode, the freewheel dog outer teeth mesh with teeth inside the freewheel itself and you have direct, conventional drive. These teeth can get worn and no longer engage. Hopefully, that hasn't happened. I would move the lever to go back to conventional drive and see how that goes. Check under the hood to make sure the lever is moving the freewheel slider properly.
Sadly, you have to remove the drivetrain to fix this if it is really worn out.
