SAABneters:
Drained the old gearbox oil today looked like the previous owner was running a too-thick 90 weight)and found bits of white nylon in the oil-tells me the nylon driven gear on the pinion shaft gave up the ghost. Replaced the gear oil with a 75-90 synthetic. I have not heard any whine in third or fourth, nor did I see a great deal of metal shavings on the magnetic end of the plug. Think this means that the gear box is sound (for now.) From what I have been reading, these boxes are not easy to work on for the home mechanic, so I think I go with the rigged up bicycle speedometer until I need to pull the box and or I get the money. Wish me luck. Are these boxes really that bad? Some of the horror stories on the boards here make you wonder. What makes these things so fragile? I'm running the stock carb on the stock 1700 cc engine. The nylon freewheel selector that sit on top of the tranny is locked down and the attachment for the lever is broken, so I can't run in freewheel. Thoughts?
